Kaal Bhairav Jayanti 2026 falls on Tuesday, 1 December 2026. Ashtami Tithi begins at 12:12 AM on 1 December and ends at 11:14 PM the same night (IST). The best time for worship is the evening Pradosh Kaal, roughly 5:40 PM to 7:25 PM, and the puja should be completed before Ashtami ends. On this day devotees fast, light a mustard-oil diya, offer black sesame, urad and imarti, chant "Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah", and feed a black dog — Bhairav's vahana.
Below is everything you need: the exact timings, the story behind the day, a simple step-by-step puja vidhi you can do at home, the mantras, a samagri list and answers to the questions devotees ask most.

Who Is Kaal Bhairav?
Kaal Bhairav is the fierce form of Lord Shiva — the lord of time (Kaal) who removes fear (bhay). According to the Shiva Purana, when Brahma spoke with pride before the gods, Shiva manifested as Bhairav and severed Brahma's fifth head. To atone, Bhairav wandered carrying the skull until it fell away in Kashi. Shiva then appointed him the Kotwal of Kashi — the guardian of the holy city — and no pilgrimage to Varanasi is considered complete without his darshan.
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, also called Kalabhairav Ashtami or Bhairav Ashtami, marks the day he appeared. It is the most important of the twelve monthly Kalashtamis.
Why Bhairav Matters in the Shakti and Aghor Tradition
In Shakti worship, Bhairav and the Devi are never apart. Every Shakti Peeth has its own Bhairav who guards the Mother's seat, and in the Aghor path Bhairav is the teacher who shows the seeker how to look fear in the eye. At Sarveshwari Shakti International Women Aghori Akhara, Bhairav is worshipped alongside our presiding deity, Maa Pratyangira Devi — the lion-faced Mother who turns back negative forces. Where the Mother protects, Bhairav stands at the door.
Benefits of Worshipping Kaal Bhairav on This Day
Devotees traditionally pray to Kaal Bhairav for:
- Freedom from fear and anxiety — he is literally "the one who destroys bhay"
- Protection from enemies, evil eye and negative energy in the home or workplace
- Strength in court cases and disputes
- Discipline and respect for time — Kaal teaches us not to waste the life we are given
- Relief from repeated obstacles that seem to have no clear cause
If any of these are weighing on you, Kaal Bhairav Jayanti is the most powerful day of the year to begin.
Kaal Bhairav Puja Samagri List
- A picture or murti of Kaal Bhairav (or Lord Shiva)
- Mustard oil and a clay or iron diya
- Black sesame seeds (kala til) and whole urad dal
- Imarti or jalebi as bhog (Bhairav's favourite), plus a coconut
- Blue or black flowers if available; otherwise any fresh flowers
- Incense, kumkum, sindoor and rice (akshat)
- A rudraksha mala for japa
- Rotis or food to feed a black dog
Kaal Bhairav Puja Vidhi at Home: Step by Step
- Take a sankalp in the morning. Bathe early, wear clean dark-coloured clothes and resolve to observe the vrat. You may keep a phalahar fast or one meal without grains.
- Prepare the altar. Clean the puja space and place Bhairav's image facing south or west. Keep a small image of Shiva or the Devi beside him.
- Light the mustard-oil diya. Add a few black sesame seeds to the oil. Bhairav is pleased by the steady flame.
- Purify and invite. Sprinkle water, apply kumkum and sindoor to the image, and offer akshat while saying "Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah."
- Offer the bhog. Place imarti or jalebi, urad, black sesame and the coconut before him.
- Chant the mantra. Recite the mantra below 108 times on a rudraksha mala. If you know the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam composed by Adi Shankaracharya, recite it once.
- Perform aarti. Wave the diya clockwise and pray for protection for your family by name.
- Ask for forgiveness. Bow and ask pardon for any mistake in the vidhi — sincerity matters more than perfection.
- Feed a black dog. Offer rotis or the bhog to a dog, ideally a black one. The dog is Bhairav's vahana, and feeding it is considered the completion of the puja.
- Break the fast after the puja with simple satvik food, or the next morning if you are keeping a full vrat.
Kaal Bhairav Mantras
- Mool mantra: ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः (Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah)
- Batuk Bhairav mantra (for protection of children and family): ॐ ह्रीं बटुकाय आपदुद्धारणाय कुरु कुरु बटुकाय ह्रीं (Om Hreem Batukaya Aapaduddharanaya Kuru Kuru Batukaya Hreem)
Chant slowly, with a calm mind. Any sincere devotee can recite the mool mantra; for deeper Bhairav sadhana, take guidance from a guru.
